Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm has announced a critical scientific development in fusion research at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The announcement took place during a news conference on December 13, 2022.

During the early hours of December 5, researchers at the facility achieved a historic milestone using powerful lasers. These lasers targeted a small pellet containing hydrogen fuel with 2.05 megajoules of energy. Remarkably, the experiment resulted in the pellet releasing approximately 3.15 megajoules of energy.

This achievement marks a significant moment for fusion science, as the field has faced challenges in creating a fusion reaction that outputs more energy than it consumes for over fifty years. This breakthrough demonstrates a reaction that achieves energy gain, a crucial step forward.

Despite this progress, nuclear fusion technology remains distant from its potential to provide energy without greenhouse gas emissions. More advancements are needed before fusion energy becomes a feasible power source.
