July 27, 1970: Riot at Grant Park
More than 50,000 people gathered in Grant Park for a Sly and the Family Stone concert, which turned into a five-hour riot. The band refused to play due to the unexpectedly large crowd, leading to the chaos. Approximately 162 people were injured, including 126 police officers, of whom 30 were hospitalized. Three young people were shot. Rioters overturned and set cars ablaze, damaged hundreds of windows, and looted stores. Police arrested 160 individuals in the end.

1919 Race Riots
Black teen Eugene Williams was attacked while floating near a segregated beach, leading to his drowning. White youths were accused of throwing rocks causing his death. The police did not arrest the assailants nor assist Williams, leading to four days of violence quelled by the Illinois militia and rain.
1960 Helicopter Crash
A helicopter crashed in Forest Park cemetery due to a rotor blade fracture, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals. This prompted the federal government to mandate more frequent inspections.
The Building of Sears Tower
In 1970, Sears announced plans for the world’s tallest building at 1,450 feet. Opened in 1973, the tower eventually lost its tallest status. It remains a significant Chicago landmark as it turns 50.
1982 Gorilla Escape
A gorilla named Otto escaped from Lincoln Park Zoo. He climbed an 11-foot wall and wandered onto a building roof before being tranquilized and returned by zoo staff.
1983 Night Game Ordinance
