Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Quest for a Third MVP Title

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Quest for a Third MVP Title

In the history of the NBA, only Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Larry Bird have secured three consecutive MVP awards. Achieving this feat is a significant challenge, underscored by the absence of names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Yet, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the Oklahoma City Thunder might join this elite group this season.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s primary goal is winning championships, not personal accolades. He stated, “I’ve just got to be the best player I can be for this basketball team, win as many games as possible.” His previous success with two consecutive MVP awards stems from this mindset. As the best player on a team favored to win the NBA championship, alongside the San Antonio Spurs, he remains a pivotal figure.

Over the past two seasons, Gilgeous-Alexander garnered over 75% of first-place MVP votes, leading the NBA with an average of 32 points per game. He believes he hasn’t peaked yet, saying, “I feel like I’m a better basketball player, more versatile as a basketball player. In better shape too.” The Thunder will face the Spurs in their season opener on NBA opening day, with other notable matchups involving the Boston Celtics and LeBron James’s Philadelphia 76ers.

Sam Presti, the Thunder’s general manager, sees Hall of Fame traits in Gilgeous-Alexander. Presti emphasized his work ethic, discipline, and emotional awareness, which have propelled him from a lightly recruited college player to a top NBA performer.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s impact is part of a broader trend of international players dominating MVP awards. The Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama is a preseason favorite for the award, indicating this trend will continue. Despite being less heralded when drafted, players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic have risen to MVP status. Gilgeous-Alexander, drafted 11th, has followed a similar path to stardom.

Presti believes Gilgeous-Alexander has more potential to unlock, with his mindset driving his progress. The Thunder’s success would likely keep him in the MVP conversation. Known for rewarding his teammates with gifts after MVP seasons, Gilgeous-Alexander values leadership over trophies. He notes that leadership naturally evolves, with fatherhood enhancing his perspective.
