Senegal’s Leadership Rift: A Political Breakdown

Two young leaders in Senegal, Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye, turned heads by defeating the established political elite. Their victory in a landmark election inspired young Africans across the continent. However, their alliance now faces a significant rupture.

Ousmane Sonko, known for his charisma and activism, faced hurdles on his path to the presidency. He was barred from running in the 2024 presidential elections due to a conviction for defaming a former official. His ally, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, stepped into the race and secured a historic win, becoming the youngest president of Senegal at the age of 44. Following his victory, Faye appointed Sonko as prime minister. Yet, tensions simmered beneath the surface, culminating in Sonko’s dismissal just two weeks ago after a prolonged period of disputes.

This weekend, their political party will hold elections to determine their next leader, testing the allegiance and influence of each man. Currently, Sonko serves as the party’s president, whereas Faye has been named honorary president.

Sonko, now 51, criticizes Faye, who is 46, of distancing the party from its campaign pledges, which include fighting corruption and challenging the entrenched elite. Meanwhile, Faye contends the party has become overly focused on Sonko’s personal image, straying from its core values.

Apart from these accusations, they are at odds over handling Senegal’s considerable national debt. However, the primary issue appears to revolve around who will stand as a candidate in the forthcoming 2029 presidential election.
