In Bar Harbor, Maine, Democratic candidate Graham Platner addressed his supporters during a difficult phase of his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Platner, aiming to unseat the Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, expressed gratitude to his supporters, labeling the criticisms against him as ‘politically motivated.’
Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, has been under scrutiny for various controversies. Issues range from questionable Reddit comments from a decade ago to a tattoo with Nazi resemblances. Recent allegations from former girlfriends accuse him of troubling behavior such as rape fantasies, excessive drinking, and violence.
When hurtful things I said on the internet a decade ago came out into the public… Maine had my back,Platner stated at a rally. Now, as every single piece of that past and journey gets dug up, litigated, and weaponized, you have my back,he continued, addressing new allegations aspolitically motivated, serious and false… Maine, you have my back.
Sen. Susan Collins is pursuing a sixth term in the Senate. Known for being a moderate Republican, Collins has occasionally voted against former President Donald Trump’s agenda. The race is crucial, as it might determine the Senate’s control.
Platner, backed by progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, is advancing an economically populist agenda focusing on corporate accountability and support for the working class. He appears to be the likely Democratic nominee after former Gov. Janet Mills withdrew from the race due to lagging polls and fundraising.
Platner has publicly acknowledged his struggle with PTSD from serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. He apologized for his past online behavior, stating the controversial tattoo was acquired impulsively while drinking in Croatia. He has since covered it with a new design after realizing its implications.
At the rally, which also featured speeches by other progressive candidates, Ro Khanna showed his support for Platner. In a pre-rally interview, Khanna addressed the allegations, emphasizing that toxic relationships are unacceptable. Although acknowledging Platner’s past issues, Khanna highlighted Platner’s personal growth and the importance of redemption.
Platner said he really grew as a person when he came back to Maine and he was an oyster farmer… we need that redemption in this country, stated Khanna.
On the other side, Collins called the allegations troubling, suggesting that Platner has many questions to address. Meanwhile, an outside group supporting Collins has highlighted Platner’s controversies in their campaign ads.
The Republican National Committee has also criticized Platner, emphasizing his past statements on social media. Despite challenges, Platner’s campaign claimed a strong turnout at the rally, with $200,000 raised in 24 hours following Mills’ campaign suspension.
Voter opinions in Maine remain divided on Platner’s controversies. Jeff from Waterboro expressed concerns over Platner’s suitability as a candidate due to his past, whereas Ellen from Acton believed despite his imperfections, Platner could perform effectively.
