Scandals and Allegations Surround Graham Platner’s Senate Campaign

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, faces allegations of sexual assault. These claims add to the scandals surrounding his candidacy. Politico reported these recent allegations involving a former girlfriend who accused Platner of assault in 2021.

The allegations have not been independently confirmed by NPR. Platner has categorically denied them, calling them false and politically motivated. His campaign also claimed that the accusations were orchestrated by external political forces.

Platner addressed the allegations in a video on social media where he expressed concern about their impact on his campaign. He emphasized his dedication to Maine and his intention to move forward despite the accusations. The allegations complicate Democratic hopes of regaining a Senate majority in the upcoming midterm elections. Maine’s role is crucial, with the party needing to gain four seats.

Since announcing his campaign, Platner has faced multiple scandals related to his personal life. In June, The New York Times reported unsettling accounts from women who had been romantically involved with Platner. These women described his behavior as demeaning and, at times, physically threatening.

Responding to these reports, Platner acknowledged past issues with alcohol but denied engaging in threatening behavior. He also faced backlash for sending explicit messages to women early in his marriage, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. The campaign confirmed these reports.

Old Reddit posts showing Platner making insensitive remarks about Black and LGBTQ+ people and sexual assault victims resurfaced. He also admitted getting a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol, claiming ignorance of its meaning at the time.

Throughout his campaign, Platner discussed his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder from military service. He portrayed these experiences as signs of his authenticity and connection with Maine voters. He told NPR that despite the controversies, he believes voters understand his genuine nature.

The new allegations contribute to doubts about Platner’s campaign viability. Some Democrats have called for him to withdraw. According to Maine election laws, Platner needs to exit the race by July 13 for Democrats to nominate a replacement for the general election. If he withdraws, a political committee has until July 27 to choose a new candidate.
