A former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas, has gained attention during the World Cup. Her public celebration of Mexico’s early success in the tournament drew comparisons to Mar Castro, a pop culture icon during the 1986 World Cup.
Her journey began when Cuevas posted a video showing herself celebrating on the streets in a low-cut top. This video, garnering hundreds of thousands of views, led to comparisons in the comments to Castro’s memorable nickname ‘La Chiquitibum.’
In her video, Cuevas expressed enthusiasm with the caption, ‘2026 FIFA World Cup: Long live Mexico, from the Angel of Independence in our #Cuauhtémoc borough! #SandraCuevasMX.’ This simple act had substantial viral impact.

The comparisons between Cuevas and a World Cup icon naturally provoked responses. She addressed the widespread attention humorously and openly. Her reaction showed she values the recognition without irritation.
In a statement, Cuevas said, ‘The Chiquitibum… well, guys, what can I do, I can’t just take them off. They had already nicknamed me that in 1986 and it amuses me, I like it.’ Her response reflects her acceptance of the viral nickname, amid nearly 1 million views.
Cuevas does not interpret these comparisons as negative. She perceives them as a cultural element of Mexican society, noting, ‘I don’t take it as an attack… that’s how we Mexicans are.’
Though the odds of Mexico winning the tournament are uncertain, Cuevas’ public presence on soccer’s largest stage could positively influence them.
