Country singer Rory Feek has unveiled a nerve-wracking experience that threatened his family’s well-being. Almost two weeks after his 12-year-old daughter, Indiana, underwent open-heart surgery, she encountered a sudden health scare that led to her being airlifted to the hospital. Indiana, born with a ventricular septal defect, faced complications shortly after her birth in 2014, and the recent emergency left Rory and his wife Rebecca deeply concerned.
In a heartfelt post on Substack, Feek recounted the frightening ordeal. Initially, Indiana’s symptoms resembled a common illness. However, a simple headache led to a series of worrying developments that culminated in a life-threatening moment. Feek described holding Indiana in his arms, fearing for her life and desperately seeking assistance.
After being taken to a hospital in Waco, Texas, doctors decided that Indiana required specialized attention. She was transported by helicopter to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, with Rory following in his truck. Medical professionals identified a severe fluid buildup around Indiana’s heart that impaired its function. As a result, an emergency surgical procedure was performed to remove 610 cc of fluid. Pre-operative X-rays had shown her heart swelling to twice its normal size, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.
The surgery provided immediate relief, with doctors reporting a positive outlook for Indiana’s full recovery. Feek expressed gratitude and relief as Indiana began to show signs of improvement.
The emergency emerged weeks after Feek spoke about Indiana’s corrective heart surgery, necessitated by complications associated with her congenital heart defect. According to the National Down Syndrome Society, approximately half of infants born with Down syndrome have related heart conditions, ranging from mild to severe.
Earlier this month, Feek celebrated Indiana’s discharge from the hospital after her initial surgery, sharing his appreciation for her progress and her medical team’s support.
The medical scare coincided with a difficult personal period for Feek and his family. Aside from Indiana, Feek is father to adult daughters Heidi and Hopie from a previous marriage. Recently, Hopie publicly disclosed that Feek is not her biological father, a revelation that has strained their relationship. Despite this challenge, Feek has continued sharing aspects of his family’s life via Substack.
