Rising Beef Prices Impacting Texas Barbecue Costs

Andrew Soto, owner and pitmaster at Butter’s BBQ in Sinton, Texas, is facing a significant challenge due to soaring beef prices. Located among the top 50 smokehouses in Texas, according to Texas Monthly’s distinguished list, Butter’s BBQ is renowned for its brisket, ribs, and sausage.

Last week, Soto confronted an unexpected situation when the wholesale price of brisket rose by $1 per pound. This increase is striking, considering the already high beef costs across the nation. Such a jump poses a tough decision for the barbecue owner.

To maintain brisket as a menu option, Soto calculates he would need to charge customers $51 per pound. This price is necessary to cover the increased costs associated with brisket, which now constitutes 70 percent of his total grocery expenses.

As meat prices continue to rise, establishments like Butter’s BBQ must reassess their pricing strategies to manage expenses while delivering quality products to their customers.
