Response to Armed Threat at Islamic Center of San Diego

The Islamic Center of San Diego experienced a crisis when two armed teenagers entered the mosque. The center had been preparing for such an event through ‘active shooter’ drills. During the incident on Monday, students implemented their training effectively, according to a teacher’s assistant named Imani.

Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that the victims were outside the mosque. Security guard Amin Abdullah engaged with the attackers when they tried to access the mosque. His actions, including using his radio to activate a lockdown, prevented further tragedy. Abdullah bravely confronted the gunmen but was ultimately killed. His efforts delayed the attackers and kept about 140 students safe.

Imani, a second and third-grade teacher’s assistant, explained how quickly she and her colleague responded to the sounds of gunfire. They informed the children that it was not a drill. The students followed drill procedures by moving to a corner of the classroom, avoiding windows, and ensuring the doors were secure. Despite the noise and danger, the children stayed calm.

Security footage showed the gunmen searching different rooms, which were empty due to the quick actions of those inside. Unfortunately, in the parking lot outside, they found and fatally shot Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad. Imani described these individuals as invaluable heroes.

The attackers, identified as Caleb Vazquez and Cain Clark, took their lives following the shooting. Authorities are examining their motives, including a 75-page document expressing extreme ideologies related to white supremacy. FBI official Mark Remily noted the broad hate expressed by the suspects.

The incident was reported by Morgan Chesky in San Diego and Tim Stelloh in Alameda, California.
