A rescue organization in Ireland found a dog abandoned outside its facility, alongside a note that left the staff deeply saddened. The note contained minimal information about the dog’s background. A Facebook video posted on May 28 by Dundalk Dog Rescue (DDR) shows a staff member filming the incident as they entered the building. Security footage revealed that the dog, named Hope, was left at the location around 5:45 a.m. She appeared frightened, staying close to the ground and avoiding eye contact. Beside her was a water bowl and an unsigned note.
The note outlined the owner’s situation but provided few insights into Hope’s background, personality, or needs. This leaves rescuers starting from the beginning to find Hope a permanent home. Under Irish law, a dog without signed paperwork, considered lost or abandoned, must enter the pound system. Hope went through the necessary hold period at the pound and is now back with DDR.
Pam from Dundalk Dog Rescue shared with Newsweek that Hope is understandably unsettled. She reassured that the team is experienced in handling such cases. Presently, Hope is being given the necessary time and space to relax. The team aims to allow her to adjust to a new routine at the shelter, which will help them assess her personality and needs. By Thursday, there had been no adoption offers for Hope. Pam highlighted that the absence of detailed information in the note requires them to evaluate Hope’s behavior directly. The objective is to ultimately find a suitable permanent home for her.
“We just want to focus on Hope—her welfare and future is our only goal,”
she stated.

Animals are sometimes left at shelters by owners who feel they have no other choice. Reasons may include financial strain, housing complications, health issues, family matters, and behavioral challenges, even when the owners care about their pets.

DDR encourages owners to reach out for support when overwhelmed, facing financial difficulties, or uncertain about caring for a pet. Assistance, advice, and surrender options are often accessible, ensuring pets like Hope can transition safely to new homes when needed.
