Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar has denied allegations of knowledge about a widespread fraud scheme. This follows comments by the Vice President that the Department of Justice (DOJ) was investigating her. Omar addressed these claims in a statement to Newsweek, countering accusations from the alleged mastermind of a $250 million meals scam.
Omar emphasized, βAny claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false. The moment this fraud came to light, I immediately sent a letter to the USDA Secretary demanding answers and accountability.β She condemned the misuse of funds meant for feeding hungry children as reprehensible.
Newsweek sought further comments from the DOJ via email on Wednesday afternoon.
Accusations Against Omar: Key Points
Aimee Bock, founder of Feeding Our Future, was convicted of conspiracy, bribery, and wire fraud in March 2025. From jail, she claimed that Omar was part of the scam involving fake claims by restaurant owners that resulted in the theft of millions in child nutrition funds. Bock expressed disbelief at the notion Omar was unaware.
Bock also insisted she did not participate knowingly in the fraud and attempted to alert officials.
MEALS Act and the Allegations
Omar introduced the MEALS Act to Congress in March 2020. It allowed the U.S. Department of Agriculture to issue waivers for school meal payments. Bock alleged Omar intervened to extend waivers, facilitating fraud. Omar denied these claims, noting the MEALS Act was signed into law by President Trump and passed with bipartisan support.
Omar expressed that gratitude over the accountability being enforced on Bock and others involved in the scheme.
Minnesota Fraud Report
A report from Minnesota state representatives accused Governor Tim Walz’s administration of creating conditions that allowed the theft of tax dollars. It also criticized Omar regarding the MEALS Act’s implications. A federal investigation has led to 57 convictions since being launched by the Biden administration in 2022.
Republican Criticism of Omar
The fraud allegations add to existing accusations from Republicans like President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Claims against Omar include immigration fraud allegations involving marrying her brother. Omar has consistently denied these unfounded claims, and no concrete evidence has surfaced.
Trump has previously called for Omar’s denaturalization and deportation, and there are efforts to remove foreign-born Congress members. Vance reiterated these claims, stating the DOJ was investigating potential immigration fraud.
Future Developments
An official investigation into these allegations has not been announced by the DOJ. Bock awaits sentencing with prosecutors recommending a 100-year prison term. Bock reflected on her situation, expressing hope for strength and peace.
