As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, we are reminded of the unique foundation laid by the Founders. They established a nation based on the belief that all individuals possess inherent, inalienable rights, rather than being ruled by inherited privilege. This perspective fostered a nation that has contributed immensely to global prosperity, innovation, and philanthropy.
The United States has enabled countless people to achieve prosperity, spearheading advancements in charity, entrepreneurship, and scientific progress. The American Dream stands distinct in offering the freedom to improve one’s life through opportunity.
There is a shift in today’s national outlook. Many young Americans are now skeptical of capitalism, showing greater faith in government solutions. This trend poses concerns for the country’s future, not due to government’s presence, but because a free society thrives on individual understanding of liberty, personal responsibility, and free enterprise, which have historically created unprecedented opportunities.
“Much of the answer lies in the classroom.”
Many students exit school without necessary skills for success in life. Schools often stress America’s flaws over the transformative ideas of constitutional government, individual liberty, and equal opportunity. For instance, a Texas mom expressed gratitude for federal tax credit scholarships aiding school choice, crediting the Trump administration for these efforts.
Though America is not perfect, it remains a leading success story due to its founding principles that have unleashed freedom, innovation, and prosperity. Young Americans today face challenges like affordable housing, inflation, and college debt. These issues may make government solutions seem attractive.
America’s strength lies in educating citizens who can self-govern. Such freedom cannot be legislated; it must be taught. This begins with education that empowers critical thinking, responsibility, and future shaping.
Investing in education is crucial for America’s future. It’s about raising individuals who understand and cherish the nation’s core principles. Two conversations with students illustrate different perspectives: one focused on government’s role in solving challenges, and the other, educated in a classical Christian environment, highlighted character and service.
Declining scores in reading and math are worrying, but equally critical is whether education fosters individuals who believe in shaping their futures. Many young Americans feel their prospects depend more on government than their own effort. Families are now seeking schools that offer character-building and civic understanding, alongside academic excellence.
The Education Freedom Tax Credit, launching in 2027, will allow Americans to receive federal tax credits for contributions to scholarship organizations. This effort aims to empower private generosity, strengthen civil society, and offer parents educational choices that best suit their children’s needs. This mirrors the unique American solution of using voluntary giving to expand educational opportunities.
As America celebrates its 250th year, preserving freedom for future generations is paramount. Education plays a critical role in this endeavor. The next 250 years will be shaped by the children we educate, ensuring they uphold and advance the principles of self-government the Founders championed.
