The Millennium Residences: A New Milestone
Beverly Hills is set to witness the rise of its tallest building with the city’s approval of The Millennium Residences. Standing at 418 feet with 34 stories, this residential high-rise will redefine the skyline, according to its developer, Millennium Partners.
Mario J. Palumbo Jr., managing partner of Millennium Partners, announced the initiation of the formal design process. Construction is planned to begin in 2027. Located at 8300 Wilshire Boulevard, the building will offer 211 homes, 32 of which are affordable units, enhancing the city’s eastern entrance.
Streamlined Approval Amid Housing Crisis
The development comes at a crucial time, with California’s housing crisis impacting many. Data from the Public Policy Institute of California shows that more than half of the state’s renters and 40% of mortgaged homeowners spend over 30% of their income on housing.
Beverly Hills faced criticism for not approving a previous high-rise proposal, but The Millennium Residences passed under California’s Assembly Bill 2011. This bill allows ministerial approvals for certain housing developments, bypassing public hearings and environmental scrutinies.
Community Concerns and Developer Engagement
Demolishing the existing mini-mall for the new tower has raised concerns among residents. Amy Amsterdam, a nearby resident, emphasized the importance of local services in the current mall. Dan Makos echoed these sentiments, stressing the impact on the community.
Palumbo Jr. assured that Millennium Partners have continuously engaged with community members and stakeholders. He emphasized their commitment to projects that benefit local areas.
California’s Expanding Skyline
California is shaping its skyline with numerous high-rise projects. For instance, in Los Angeles, One Beverly Hills is under construction, set to exceed The Millennium Residences in height.
San Francisco is also expanding with approved high-rises like 530 Howard Street and 10 South Van Ness Avenue, showcasing the demand for urban development.
These developments highlight the growing trend towards dense, urban environments, fulfilling the needs of housing and mixed-use spaces.
