Rain Sensor Failure Causes Delay at U.S. Open

Rain delay impacted tennis matches at Louis Armstrong Stadium, disrupting scheduled play on Sunday night at the U.S. Open. A mechanical issue with the roof sensors prevented the roof from closing promptly as rain started.

During the night session, No. 9 seed Elina Svitolina concluded her match against Argentina’s Solana Sierra with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in 51 minutes, paving the way for No. 15 seed Alexander Bublik and American wild card J.J. Wolf to start early.

Approximately 20 minutes after Svitolina’s match ended, rain began, halting play on outdoor courts. The roof systems on Armstrong and Ashe were supposed to shield Bublik, Wolf, Djokovic, and Navone from the rain.

However, Armstrong’s roof remained open. The United States Tennis Association explained that a fault in the roof sensors led to its delay in closing, resulting in rain soaking the court.

With the issue resolved, and after drying the court, Bublik and Wolf commenced their match at about 9:30 p.m., approximately 90 minutes later than expected.

Fans showed their support as the roof shut. While the court dried, lines at the concession stands, particularly for Honey Deuce drinks, had stretched across the stadium.

By 9:45 p.m., concession stands reported dwindling supplies of melon balls, a key ingredient in the popular cocktail.
