President Donald Trump introduced a new Air Force One aircraft, named the ‘VC-25B Bridge,’ during a private event at a hangar. The aircraft, a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, was originally a gift to the United States from the government of Qatar. This luxury jet recently underwent a $400 million overhaul, equipping it with secure communications and anti-missile defense systems. The unveiling took place at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where the aircraft showcased a new dark blue, red, and gold design, chosen by Trump. This color scheme replaces the classic light blue used since the Kennedy era.
Aircraft Commissioning and Upcoming Deployments
The U.S. Air Force announced that the aircraft will begin initial commissioning flights soon. It will be prepared for future presidential missions. Trump mentioned that the new Air Force One will participate in a flyover above Washington, D.C., on July 4, describing it as an unprecedented spectacle.
Specifications of the VC-25B Bridge
The ‘VC-25B Bridge’ is a modified Boeing 747-8i originally designed as a luxury business jet for the Qatari royal family. While traditional presidential aircraft are custom-built, this jet’s existing interior was retained to expedite delivery. It features high-end wood paneling, premium leather upholstery, and master bedrooms, offering an opulent flying experience. Trump highlighted the aircraft’s transformation into a luxurious ‘flying White House.’
Military Overhaul and Design Changes
Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies performed a military overhaul on the aircraft, retrofitting it with advanced defense systems and secure communication capabilities. The new livery includes a navy-blue base, red accents, and a white top, which Trump preferred. This redesign departs from the JFK-era color scheme. Trump initiated these changes during his first term, and after gaining re-election, reinstated them following President Joe Biden’s reversal.
Future Presidential Travels and Color Scheme Plans
The Air Force intends to apply the new red, white, and navy color scheme to other government aircraft used by senior officials. Trump announced plans to travel on the new aircraft to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, and suggested future travel to China. His recent return from the G7 summit in France marked his last flight on the current Air Force One.
Cost Concerns and Emoluments Clause Debate
The aircraft was a gift, but retrofitting costs led to controversy. Initial estimates suggested a $400 million cap, yet reports of a $934 million transfer from a missile defense program stirred debates. Defense officials argued this was necessary due to Boeing’s delayed delivery of replacements. Concerns arose regarding the Foreign Emoluments Clause with ethics experts questioning the legality of accepting such a gift. Senator Patty Murray labeled the deal a constitutional breach. Trump’s administration countered these claims, asserting the aircraft’s ownership will transfer to Trump’s presidential library post-presidency.
Current Presidential Aircraft Operations
An Air Force representative, under anonymity, stated that both existing VC-25A jets and the Qatari aircraft will remain in service. The Presidential Airlift Group will select appropriate aircraft based on specific mission needs.
