Phillies Stun Nationals with Incredible Ninth-Inning Comeback

The Philadelphia Phillies faced a daunting task in the top of the ninth inning, trailing 8-6 against the Washington Nationals. Orion Kerkering had earlier surrendered a three-run homer, causing Philadelphia to lose its lead late in the game.

The Phillies seemed to hit rock bottom when their first two batters struck out at the start of the ninth inning. Veteran shortstop Trea Turner was on his last strike, and defeat appeared imminent for Philadelphia against their NL East rivals.

However, Trea Turner surprised the crowd by hitting a single to center field, keeping the Phillies’ chances alive.

When it seemed Philly’s hopes were dashed, Brandon Marsh stepped up and hit a two-run home run, leading to an unexpected comeback. Marsh’s homer triggered an eight-run frenzy in the ninth inning, shocking the Nationals and their fans with a 14-9 victory.

This remarkable ninth inning was the Phillies’ highest-scoring since September 27, 2015, when they similarly scored eight runs against the Nationals. Notably, all runs were scored with two outs.

Following Marsh’s homer, Bryce Harper kept the momentum, adding a single. Derek Hill followed suit with another single, setting the stage for Bryson Stott, who hadn’t produced since the eighth inning when he contributed three runs.

Stott delivered under pressure, hitting a three-run homer down the left-field line that swayed in favor of the Phillies, giving them an 11-8 lead.

The Phillies continued to dominate. Edmundo Sosa drove in two additional runs, increasing the score to 13-8. Trea Turner returned to bat, adding another single and bringing home Sosa, enhancing Philadelphia’s lead.

The inning ended with Marsh striking out, but the Nationals’ spirit and their fans’ hopes had already been crushed entering the bottom half of the ninth. Though Luis Garcia Jr. hit a solo home run, the Nationals faced a harsh collapse they wished to forget.

The Nationals allowed ten consecutive Phillies batters to reach base — eight through hits, including three extra-base hits and two crucial homers. Both J.T. Realmuto and Justin Crawford earned walks amidst the rally.

In terms of standings in the NL East, despite being early in the season, the Phillies now hold a 43-36 record. They are six games behind first place, occupied by the Atlanta Braves. The Nationals closely trail the Phillies with a 41-39 record, as do the Miami Marlins.

What transpired in Washington was a testament to the unpredictable nature of baseball. The Phillies embraced the mantra of playing until the last out, leading to an unforgettable eight-run finish.
