Patrick McEnroe Sounds the Alarm on College Athletics
Patrick McEnroe, a renowned figure in tennis, is advocating for federal reforms in college athletics, addressing foreign recruitment, transgender participation, and other concerns. Hosting ‘Tomi Lahren is Fearless,’ McEnroe illustrated his points, emphasizing tennis as a critical indicator, or ‘canary in the coal mine,’ in college sports. Observing a match between top SEC and ACC teams, he noted that 21 out of 24 players were foreign recruits, indicating a significant imbalance.

McEnroe shared his deep concerns with the Education and Workforce Committee, highlighting his lifelong involvement in tennis and the noticeable increase in foreign player numbers. At the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development, McEnroe discussed with lawmakers the declining presence of American athletes in NCAA programs, advocating for more opportunities for domestic players. His initiative spurred a Wall Street Journal op-ed and meetings with politicians regarding a new bill in the House of Representatives.
McEnroe emphasized that American universities and their athletic departments should focus on educating and providing opportunities for American students, prioritizing domestic talent over international pros.
Transgender Participation in Sports
McEnroe further addressed the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. As a father to three daughters, he voiced a firm stance against transgender participation in female sports, naming it a protective measure for young girls.
Marijuana Smell Disruption at U.S. Open
At the U.S. Open, a marijuana haze disrupted play, drawing criticism from participants. McEnroe urged players to be more understanding, attributing the scent to tournament workers taking breaks behind the venue. He noted his preference for old-time grill smoke over the current situation.
Aryna Sabalenka, after defeating Jessica Pegula, supported WTA rules on transgender participation, asserting males should not compete against females.
McEnroe humorously recalled enjoying the aroma of charcoal grill smoke, stating, ‘A little weed wouldn’t affect me as much as a burger’s charcoal smell,’ and urged dissatisfied parties to relax.
