Owen Crouch’s Impactful Season Elevates Jacobs

Junior receiver Owen Crouch reflects on his breakthrough season with Jacobs, highlighting a significant play that marked a turning point for both himself and the team. Recently, the Golden Eagles overcame a 17-point lag to triumph over Burlington Central, keeping their record spotless. Crouch’s impressive 74-yard touchdown reception from Austin Stennett narrowed the gap to 20-10.

“I’ve been contemplating this year,” Crouch shared, after recording five receptions for 111 yards in their 31-27 win. “That catch shifted the momentum for me, setting a benchmark for my performance moving forward. I feel we never gave up mentally in that game. Knowing we have the ability to stage a comeback is reassuring as we face upcoming tough matchups.”

Crouch, standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 150 pounds, followed his outstanding performance against the Rockets by gathering five catches for 135 yards and touchdowns of 69, 19, and 18 yards during Friday’s 49-6 triumph over McHenry. The win positions Jacobs (5-0, 5-0) to potentially dominate the Fox Valley Conference championship when they compete against Huntley (5-0, 5-0) on Friday.

The precision in Crouch’s route running and his exceptional hands have notably impressed Jacobs’ coach, Brian Zimmerman. He acknowledged the substantial impact of Crouch’s long touchdown during the rally against Burlington Central. “That play was the catalyst for our comeback that night,” Zimmerman stated. “He showcases some of the most precise route running I’ve observed. He’s agile and incredibly resilient, handling collisions well.

“One distinguishing feature of him is his reliable catching. His hands are remarkable.”

Crouch credits his collaboration over the years with junior quarterback Stennett for refining his skills. “I consistently work on my route running and catching abilities,” Crouch explained. “These are areas I emphasize. Stennett and I invest time daily, experimenting with strategies we favor or discard. His presence aids greatly in our joint troubleshooting.”

Stennett, too, has made a significant jump this season for the Golden Eagles, recognized primarily for their rushing plays. Their offensive plays have become more diverse, and the close rapport between Crouch and Stennett has been pivotal. “I’ve had Owen as one of my receivers since my freshman year,” Stennett revealed. “Our connection has strengthened over the years, evident in recent weeks.”

This week, Jacobs journeys to Huntley for a crucial match to maintain their unbeaten status. Jacobs’ Owen Crouch, taking a reprieve from team meetings in Algonquin, is captured in a photograph on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, by Paul Johnson from The Beacon-News.

“It’s a significant matchup,” Zimmerman noted. “It promises an electric atmosphere, coinciding with their homecoming. Likely, about 5,000 attendees will gather. For us, it’s about persistence and diligence this week, maintaining the focus we’ve upheld so far.

“The team is impressive, not initially predicted to perform at this level, yet they’ve excelled tremendously.”

Crouch approaches this pivotal encounter with composure. “They present a challenge, being 5-0, yet it’s merely another week for us. Our aim remains to win each time we play. That’s been our mindset throughout the season.”

Crouch, who previously mainly played junior varsity, now leads Jacobs as a top receiver. He values his breakout season highly. “Being a former JV player, awaiting my chance, it’s rewarding for it finally to arrive,” Crouch shared. “It’s fulfilling to see my past efforts materialize positively. Observing everything align and boost my confidence is gratifying.”
