Olive Garden Tops Baby Boomer Preference in Dining Survey

Olive Garden is known for more than its unlimited breadsticks. A recent survey highlights its popularity among baby boomers. YouGov’s U.S. restaurant brand rankings polled 7,500 adults aged 65 and older. Among them, 33.8% prefer Olive Garden for casual dining, surpassing Texas Roadhouse, Applebee’s, Cracker Barrel, and Outback Steakhouse.

The survey revealed Olive Garden as the top choice among adults 65 and older for dining and drinks. It ranks first in service (12.8%) and dining experience (12.1%) among surveyed Americans. The Florida-based chain, established in 1982, maintains a strong reputation.

“In an environment where consumers are increasingly selective about how they spend their hard-earned dollars, quality, hospitality, and the overall dining experience play a critical role,” said Chad Moutray, chief economist for the National Restaurant Association.

Beyond older diners, Olive Garden appeals to families and those seeking convenience. Morning Consult’s Most Trusted Brands report in 2026 noted its high ranking for family outings, avoiding cooking, and specific food cravings. The report also indicated Olive Garden’s strong emotional resonance compared to competitors.

Olive Garden leads in categories like going out with family (40%), not wanting to cook (37%), and generous portions (32%). Only Gen Z chose another casual dining chain, with Chili’s being preferred.

Gen X and millennials also favor Olive Garden according to the YouGov study. For those aged 30–44 and 45–64, it remains the top choice. Although Gen Z preferred Chili’s, with 29.6%, Olive Garden followed closely at 28.7%.

Other casual dining favorites among baby boomers include Texas Roadhouse (28.2%), Applebee’s (24.7%), Cracker Barrel (24%), and Outback Steakhouse (22.1%).
