Novak Djokovic, regarded as one of the finest tennis players of his generation, faced a surprising setback at the U.S. Open on Sunday night. The 24-time Grand Slam champion was unexpectedly defeated in the first round of the 2026 tournament. He lost to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
On the court, Djokovic showed vulnerabilities, with 10 double faults and 70 unforced errors marking his gameplay. He disclosed dealing with health issues, stating, “It’s something that I’ve been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year: vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there. Then my whole body starts to collapse, basically cramping and pain. Yeah, the back just gave up in the end and shoulder, and I couldn’t close it out.”
This early exit was a first for Djokovic at the U.S. Open, a tournament he had won three times previously. Entering as the fourth seed, he struggled to overcome Navone despite attempts to regain dominance in the match.
Reflecting on the game, Djokovic added, “Just struggled all the way since the fourth game of the match. When it comes to match itself and overall feeling of how I felt with (my) body and playing, it was really not enjoyable. I pretty much despised every moment that I spent on the court for that.”
Mariano Navone expressed mixed emotions, describing the experience as bittersweet. “(It) was very tough for me because you are playing with the ‘GOAT’ on this court. For sure it’s the best thing I’ve had on court. This is an amazing court and the biggest stage. It’s amazing, the way we play. I mean, five sets. … I’m very happy. I don’t know. What can I say?”
Navone, 25, had previously won an ATP tournament in Romania earlier this year, marking the first victory of his career. His triumph over Djokovic at the U.S. Open adds to his notable achievements.
