North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans for a substantial expansion of the country’s naval forces. At a commissioning ceremony for a new destroyer, Kim emphasized the goal to construct two large warships each year over the next five years.
The event marked the deployment of a new multipurpose destroyer at the port of Nampho. Kim referenced that the nation should focus on building vessels similar in size to its 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class ship over the forthcoming years, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
In April, Kim observed the launch of two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles from the new destroyer, which successfully completed military operational tests over the past 14 months, according to KCNA.
Kim highlighted the significance of developing the Choe Hyon as a major step toward enhancing North Korea’s military operational reach and preemptive strike capabilities. This advancement aligns with the navy’s nuclearization objectives, contributing to the country’s nuclear deterrence.
The naval enhancement comes amid Kim’s efforts to bolster one of North Korea’s historically weaker military branches. KCNA reported Kim’s objectives to deploy another 5,000-ton destroyer named Kang Kon, along with larger 10,000-ton strategic warships.
The Kang Kon was revealed last year in May but encountered issues during its initial launch in Chongjin, resulting in damage. After necessary repairs, the vessel has been relaunched.
Kim believes adding new capabilities will transform North Korea’s navy into a formidable force. Images recently released showcase developments in constructing nuclear-powered submarines.
During the ceremony, Kim underscored the importance of developing a modernized naval base, describing it as a critical task. Plans for establishing new naval bases are under review.
In a Workers’ Party Central Committee meeting, Kim stated that the navy would undergo changes regarding its status, role, and scope of operations. Specific details on these changes have not been disclosed.
