Rep. Chuck Edwards from North Carolina, a Republican, has stepped away from the McDonald’s restaurant business he and his wife owned for years. He states the sale allows him to spend more time serving western North Carolina in Congress. This decision aligns with his announcement of withdrawing from his re-election campaign to focus on fulfilling his current term.
In a message posted on X at 3:32 a.m. ET, Edwards addressed his decision: “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America.” This announcement followed a report from the House Ethics Committee recommending his censure.
Ethics Committee Report
The House Committee on Ethics released a report outlining allegations against Edwards. Despite Edwards’ denial of any sexual or romantic intentions, the report criticized his conduct towards two young female staffers. It mentioned his behavior, including giving lavish gifts, making comments on their appearance, and inviting them to personal events, which could be interpreted as inappropriate. The Committee found no evidence of Edwards engaging in sexual activity with any staff member but noted the discomfort his conduct caused.
“Both women were uncomfortable with his behavior,” the report states. “Representative Edwards was at minimum blind to that reality, and at worst, dismissive of the impact his inappropriate conduct had on the careers and wellbeing of two women on his staff.”
The Committee recommended Edwards face censure for his conduct. Following this report, the Congressman expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
Rep. Edwards held his position in the U.S. House of Representatives since early 2023. He previously secured a significant victory in the GOP primary for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District. His departure from public office comes amidst these ethical challenges.
