New Mexico Name Change Proposal Faces Opposition

Gregg Hull, a Republican candidate for governor in New Mexico, opposed President Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the state as ‘New America.’ Trump mentioned on Truth Social that changing the name would increase ‘value and prestige,’ and might even lead to more honest elections.

In a post on X, Hull reiterated that New Mexico does not require a new name. Trump’s idea isn’t new. In September, he shared an image with ‘Mexico’ crossed out and ‘America’ written below. Previously, Trump proposed changing the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario’s names as well.

“That identity is never up for negotiation. EVER,” Hull stated.

Hull emphasized the state’s cultural identity and its focus on economic issues like jobs and energy independence. He noted these priorities guide his campaign.

Midterm elections typically test the political climate for the ruling party. Trump lost the state to Vice President Kamala Harris by around 6% in 2024. His approval ratings on policy issues like the economy and immigration have declined due to affordability concerns among Americans.

Gas prices in New Mexico exceed the national average. On Monday, a gallon of gas cost $4.3465 compared to the $4.2953 national average, according to AAA.

The Albuquerque Journal criticized Trump’s proposal as ‘elementary and low-hanging fruit.’ Journalist Ryan Boetel advised against engaging with it, likening it to immature tactics.

MapQuest, countering Trump’s previous renaming attempt on Lake Ontario, acknowledged New Mexico humorously on X.

Reactions from New Mexico Lawmakers

Senator Ben Ray Lujan emphasized the historical significance of New Mexico’s name, which predates the United States. He asserted the state’s pride in its identity would endure beyond Trump’s political career.

Governor Michelle Grisham dismissed Trump’s proposal as a distraction tactic on X, highlighting the state’s accomplishments. She mentioned New Mexico’s universal childcare, healthcare subsidies restoration, and secure elections as evidence of effective Democratic policies.

Newsweek attempted to contact the Republican Party of New Mexico for additional comments.
