The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner announced that NBA player Brandon Clarke, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies, died from an accidental overdose involving heroin and cocaine. Clarke, aged 29, was discovered dead in his Los Angeles residence on May 11. Law enforcement found drug paraphernalia at the site.
Brandon Clarke initially entered the NBA as a first-round selection by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. However, his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the rights to Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick. Clarke quickly showcased his talent with the Grizzlies, securing the MVP title in the 2019 NBA Summer League. He was notable for being the second non-American player to achieve this honor. Over seven years, Clarke primarily contributed off the bench for the team.
The previous season proved challenging for Clarke. He managed to play in only two games due to surgery on his right knee, followed by a right calf strain, which curtailed his participation in most matches during the season. Despite Memphis Grizzlies’ March announcement that Clarke continued rehabbing his injury, medical assessments suggested a longer recovery time was needed, pushing his expected return to next season.
In April, Clarke faced legal issues when arrested in Arkansas, charged with various offenses, including improper passing and possession of a controlled substance. His court appearance was scheduled for May 15. During his college years at Gonzaga, Clarke was a standout player and later became a key figure for the Grizzlies, making the 2019-20 All-Rookie Team and averaging 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game during that season.
Over his career, Clarke played an average of 20.8 minutes across 309 games, tallying an average of 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per contest.
