Mychal Threets, host of the “Reading Rainbow” reboot, is placing an emphasis on his mental well-being. Threets announced on Threads that he plans to admit himself to a hospital for treatment. He expressed, “I am not okay. I am seeking help. Going to the hospital tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace.”
He also conveyed gratitude for those who care about him, stating, “No matter what happens, I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people who worry and help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you.”
Threets received encouragement from his followers. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown suggested, “If you need the help, maybe go tonight, friend.” Another user urged, “Please get the help you need because this world is better with you in it.”
Many people, including those who have not met Threets, showed their support. One person remarked, “Please take care of yourself. You are loved by so many people, even by those who haven’t met you but admire all that you stand for. Please keep on living. We need you so much!”
Threets has openly shared his mental health challenges. After gaining a substantial following by posting uplifting messages on TikTok and Instagram in 2023, he resigned from a librarian role in California in 2024 due to mental health issues. He admitted to NBC Bay Area that he struggled with feelings of burnout and had contemplated suicide.
Threets took over as host of “Reading Rainbow” in 2025, succeeding LeVar Burton. The original “Reading Rainbow” aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006.
