Ketel Marte, an essential player for the Arizona Diamondbacks since 2017, unexpectedly did not show up for an important series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. His absence was surprising as neither the team management, nor his manager, nor his teammates were informed beforehand.
Arizona realized the situation only 20 minutes before the first pitch when they placed Marte on the restricted list. Manager Torey Lovullo expressed confusion, saying, “there was very little coming back” from Marte regarding his absence.
Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks bats during the first inning against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, on May 30, 2026.
Lovullo admitted that while they were unsure of Marte’s whereabouts, his agent released a statement. It mentioned Marte is dealing with a “personal matter” and requires an MRI for a knee injury. “[Marte] appreciates the support from fans, teammates, and the organization,” the statement said.
The situation grew stranger as team executives confessed they still did not understand why Marte was absent. In an interview with “Bickley & Marotta” on 98.7 in Phoenix, team CEO Derrick Hall called it a “mystery.”
“Still a complete mystery,” Hall said. “It’s just bizarre.”
Hall emphasized the need for explanations and apologies from Marte to move forward. Hall recalled seeing Marte at the team hotel, where he appeared “fine,” making his no-show more baffling.
He pointed out the lack of prior communication was inexcusable. “Any player who has a responsibility to be at the ballpark needs to be there, unless it’s been prearranged,” said Hall.
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte waves to the crowd as they cheer him on as he comes up to bat against the Miami Marlins during a game in Phoenix on June 27, 2025.
Hall wanted to know the MRI results and reason for not seeking treatment if Marte was injured. “I’m disappointed a player didn’t show up and go where he was supposed to,” Hall said, hoping for reasonable explanation.
Marte’s unexplained absence, despite being a top player earning $20 million annually, is unusual. Whether a personal issue or knee injury is involved, notification would have excused his absence. The lack of communication has left the team seeking clarity.
