Multilingual Drama ‘Fjord’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded with the awarding of the Palme d’Or to Fjord, a multilingual drama directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. The film features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a devout Christian couple accused of child abuse. In his acceptance speech, Mungiu emphasized the role of cinema in addressing significant societal issues like radicalization and division.

Fjord transforms a family dispute, once child protection services intervene, into a public spectacle, symbolizing the clash between religious conservatism and social liberalism. This marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or; he previously won in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

This year’s festival felt quieter compared to previous years, partly due to the absence of major American studios and globally known stars. Despite a lack of standout films in the main competition, where movies compete for the Palme, the event still showcased talent and skill, though it lacked the passionate responses seen in other years.

The top awards for best director, actress, and actor were split between multiple winners. The jury, led by filmmaker Park Chan-wook, was diverse, featuring actress Demi Moore and director Chloé Zhao. Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski shared the best director award for Fatherland with Spanish directors Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for La Bola Negra, which intertwines stories across historical periods.
