A mother in Clacton-on-Sea, England, has revealed how she discovered her autistic son’s talent for art in an unexpected way. Katie Morris, a mother of five, shared the touching story of her 12-year-old son, Michael. Michael faces unique challenges as he has high-functioning autism and global developmental delay (GDD).
High-functioning autism describes individuals who are autistic, possess average or above-average intelligence, and can communicate verbally. However, they may have difficulty with social interactions, sensory sensitivities, and adapting to changes. GDD involves noticeable delays in two or more areas of development, such as speech and movement.
Morris expressed pride in Michael’s perseverance. “He will always try to overcome obstacles,” she said. Art has become a meaningful outlet for Michael, even though he engages in it when he is in the right mood.

A 2022 review in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy found that creative arts activities help improve social interaction, communication, and emotional development in autistic children. For Morris, the breakthrough moment came when Michael brought home a school painting of a whale. Morris shared the moment on her TikTok account, expressing her amazement at Michael’s abilities. “He doesn’t like to draw at home,” she wrote. “I was amazed and proud of him.” The video showcased not only Michael’s skill but also Morris’s pride, moving many viewers.
