The Mexican government has announced the auctioning of a plot within the country club where Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho,” died in a military confrontation in February. Although authorities have not revealed who originally owned the land, its location coincides with the exact area where El Mencho was killed in Tapalpa, Jalisco.
The auctioned land starts at a price of approximately $750,000 and is part of a collection of 211 properties to be auctioned on Thursday. In previous years, properties belonging to Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the Sinaloa Cartel’s founder, were auctioned after his arrest and subsequent imprisonment in the United States.
In February, Mexican special forces, supported by U.S. intelligence, tracked down and killed the cartel leader in Jalisco. They discovered him “hidden in the undergrowth” with items like a crucifix, religious candles, and a handwritten psalm found at the site. The operation’s success included finding his location through one of his romantic partners.
El Mencho’s death incited a violent response from his cartel, which conducted roadblocks and set vehicles ablaze across vast regions. The chaos resulted in the deaths of several dozen individuals, including 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard. In 2025, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), led by El Mencho, was labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the Trump administration.
El Mencho was buried in March in a Zapopan, Guadalajara cemetery, in a golden casket with large flower wreaths and considerable military presence. The cartel faced another setback when authorities captured one of its leaders, Audias Flores Silva, known as “El Jardinero.” Seen as a potential successor to El Mencho, Silva was apprehended after hiding in a roadside ditch.
The U.S. had placed a $5 million reward for Silva’s arrest. Recently, a U.S. federal grand jury increased charges against him, including methamphetamine trafficking and money laundering conspiracy.
