Flashback: August 3, 1991
Fans filled the World Music Theatre in Tinley Park on August 3, 1991, for the inaugural Lollapalooza festival. Notable performances included Jane’s Addiction, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, and Nine Inch Nails. Music critic Greg Kot of the Tribune remarked on its potential historical significance, noting its unique setup as a traveling festival. Lollapalooza found a regular home in Grant Park starting in 2005.

In 1932, Joseph Webster Golinkin achieved gold in mixed graphic arts at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics for “Leg Scissors,” a boxing-themed piece. His later military service earned him a Bronze Star during World War II.
The 1936 Berlin Olympics were notable for Jesse Owens’ first of four gold medal victories.
Mike Conley, a former Luther South High School athlete, set an Olympic record in triple jump at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. His jump measured 57 feet, 10¼ inches and stood as an Olympic record, though later surpassed. Conley’s prowess in the field remained undisputed, ranking him first in the world in triple jump multiple times.
Sports Milestones
Nellie Fox, a Chicago White Sox second baseman, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997, posthumously recognizing his contribution to the sport.
On August 3, 2024, Steve McMichael and Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears were honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. McMichael, who battled ALS, passed away his the following year in 2025.
