Maryland Fails to Collect Over $800 Million in Toll Charges

A recent audit revealed that the Maryland Transportation Authority has not collected more than $800 million in tolls and penalties from out-of-state drivers. These unpaid fees, amounting to $818.1 million as of January, highlight a significant collection issue.

Drivers from Virginia had a notable impact, contributing over $234 million to this total in unpaid tolls and penalties over a five-year span.

This lack of action in collecting payments from motorists using Maryland’s toll roads and bridges raises concerns about the effectiveness of the authority’s enforcement measures.

The audit emphasizes the importance of addressing these gaps to improve the agency’s financial management and ensure compliance with toll payments.
