Marist’s Lexi Kyros Shines Despite Semifinal Loss

In Peoria, Marist junior Lexi Kyros faced challenging moments on Friday as the hits didn’t come for her during the Class 4A state semifinal. Despite the struggles at bat, she showcased extraordinary defensive skills, reinforcing her reputation as a top college recruit committed to Michigan.

Kyros demonstrated her abilities behind the plate by quickly throwing out a runner from Lincoln-Way West at home, followed by catching another trying to steal second. Her focus on aiding the team was evident in her words: “I’ve said it multiple times, as long as I can keep us throwing the least amount of pitches possible, it’s better. I want everything for this team.” Marist encountered a 2-1 upset in their game at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

Other notable performances included Maddie Rogers, Layla Peters, and Ellie Holmstrom each contributing two hits. Soleil Tate, committed to Wisconsin, struck out six opponents, while Abby Brueggmann of St. Xavier clinched the pitching victory for the Warriors with four strikeouts and eight stranded runners. Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Forsythe added a crucial triple and Reese Rourke managed a steal at home.

Marist will proceed to face Oswego in the third-place match on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. Although not the desired position, reaching the state level was a significant achievement after falling in the supersectional round the previous year.

During the game, Marist’s challenge against Brueggmann was not due to being overwhelmed; rather, the team struggled with runners in scoring positions. They achieved their sole run in the fourth inning through Holmstrom’s double and Alia Rowles’ RBI squeeze bunt.

Reflecting on the team’s difficulties, Kyros admitted, “We left too many girls on base. I didn’t execute when needed.” However, her standout moment in the third inning involved her quick response to Tate’s pitch that got away, where she skillfully flipped the ball back to Tate at the plate, preventing a run.

Maddie Rogers appreciates Kyros’ leadership, stating, “She’s a team player. Her plays change the game. Without her, it’s a whole different scenario.” Coach Colleen Phelan echoes these sentiments, emphasizing Kyros’ focus and readiness, noting, “Lexi always has her head in the game. She’s ready for that next play.”

Looking ahead, Kyros is determined to improve and is optimistic about the next season, expressing, “I want more for next year. I know I can do more.”
