Los Angeles Lakers Enter New Era Without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new chapter as LeBron James will not be part of their roster for the first time in eight years. Over recent seasons, James made headlines by breaking records and sharing historic moments with his son, Bronny James. Notably, Bronny was drafted by the Lakers as the 55th pick in 2024, leading to noteworthy achievements like the first father-son assist in game play.

This offseason, LeBron James left the Lakers to explore free agency. Following speculation on potential reunions with either the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, James opted for a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

During the Lakers’ initial media session for training camp, Bronny James shared his thoughts on experiencing the season without his father’s presence on the team. He expressed his mixed emotions, saying, “Feels like he’s not here. He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season, too. Looking forward to it. It’s something different.”

The Lakers have revamped their lineup with the addition of Walker Kessler, brought in through a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz. They have also strengthened their backcourt by acquiring guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

Last season, Bronny James had a supportive role on the Lakers’ main lineup while also playing for the South Bay Lakers, which is now called the Coachella Valley Lakers. He participated in 42 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds in 8.9 minutes per game. Concerns persist about whether he will become a prominent NBA player or face challenges in the shadows of his father’s success. Reflecting on the upcoming season, Bronny stated, “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season.”

The Lakers begin their regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 21, facing the Golden State Warriors. On Christmas Day, Bronny and LeBron James may face each other on the court in a matchup where the Lakers host the 76ers.
