The Los Angeles Chargers currently face a challenging start to their NFL season. Through three weeks, the team remains winless. Notably, two losses came with significant margins against the Cardinals and Raiders, who together secured only six wins last season. However, the latest defeat against the Bills stands out as particularly disappointing.
In Sunday’s game against Buffalo, the Chargers had opportunities to win after forcing five turnovers. Despite this, they lost 24-16 as offensive issues persisted. Although Los Angeles held a 13-10 lead in the fourth quarter, quarterback Justin Herbert struggled to close out drives, often resulting in field goals. This allowed the Bills, led by Josh Allen, to rally with two scoring drives, sealing the game’s outcome.
Following the loss, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh emphasized the need for Herbert to make better decisions. “Be better,” Harbaugh stated, highlighting that improvement is essential for Herbert, his position coach, and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
Selected sixth overall in the 2020 draft from Oregon, Herbert quickly made a name for himself. He earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and then showcased impressive stats in his sophomore season. Herbert threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns with 15 interceptions, completing 65.9% of his passes. Additionally, he contributed 302 rushing yards. However, he has yet to reach the playoffs’ latter stages or a Super Bowl, despite continued individual success. Last season, he threw for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns, with 13 interceptions and a career-high 498 rushing yards. Nonetheless, the Chargers were eliminated in the Wild Card round with an 11-6 record.
This season has presented more difficulties. In three games, Herbert has amassed 627 passing yards and three touchdowns along with four interceptions. His current completion rate is a career-low 59.1%, contributing to the team’s winless record. If Herbert does not improve, questions about his capabilities might arise.
The road ahead for the Chargers is demanding. They are set to visit the Seahawks, followed by challenging games against the Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, and Ravens. The pressure to perform is mounting for Herbert and the team.
