Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are set to transform their concept album, “Warriors,” into a Broadway musical. This adaptation is based on a 1965 novel that had earlier inspired a cult dystopian film in 1979.
The story follows the plight of a street gang known as the Warriors as they journey from the Bronx back to their home in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Along the way, they are pursued by rival gangs and law enforcement. This marks Miranda’s first full musical endeavor since “Hamilton.”
The Broadway production of “Warriors” is slated to debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Previews are planned for March, with an official opening in April. Jenny Koons will direct the show, and Miranda and Davis are responsible for the book. Casting details have yet to be disclosed.
“Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can’t wait,” the creators expressed in a statement.
Miranda and Davis first released their album in 2024, maintaining the original story’s core yet implementing strategic gender alterations, transforming the Warriors into an all-female gang. The album featured an impressive roster of artists such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry.
The album showcases an eclectic mix of music genres such as salsa, ska, agro-rock, pop, old-school rap, and K-pop. Furthermore, it features Spanish and Korean languages alongside English. Notable tracks include “We Got You,” an R&B piece performed by a cardigan-clad male gang, and “Quiet Girls,” a feminist anthem.
