Las Vegas Raiders Face Challenges with Taron Johnson’s Contract

The Las Vegas Raiders have made significant additions to their roster for the 2026 season. They acquired quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman winner, and veteran Kirk Cousins. The team also signed linebackers Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean, edge rusher Kwity Paye, and Tyler Linderbaum, a highly regarded center. Additionally, former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has been appointed as the new head coach. His offense will be led by Mendoza, Ashton Jeanty, and Brock Bowers.

Among these changes, the Raiders also traded for Buffalo Bills nickelback Taron Johnson earlier this year. Initially, this trade seemed like a smart move in the offseason. However, as training camp approaches, it has turned into a potential issue. Johnson’s contract situation has become a concern. While he remains under contract through 2028, only $1.2 million of his $8.1 million base salary is guaranteed this season. There are no guarantees for 2027.

ESPN’s Ryan McFadden has reported that the Raiders may need to renegotiate Johnson’s contract to add guarantees, aiming to satisfy both parties. Taron Johnson was drafted in the fourth round in 2018 out of Weber State. He quickly became a key player in Sean McDermott’s system in Buffalo. During his time with the Bills, Johnson recorded 572 career tackles, eight sacks, eight forced fumbles, six interceptions, and 48 pass breakups across eight seasons. Known for his big plays under pressure, he is considered one of the NFL’s top nickel cornerbacks. The Raiders expected him to bring those qualities to their team upon his trade in March.

As Johnson approaches his 30th birthday in July, he seeks more security after this trade. The Raiders have drafted versatile defensive back Treydan Stukes in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Stukes, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound safety from Arizona, posted 52 total tackles, 10 passes defensed, four interceptions, and one sack last year. He possesses many of the attributes that led Las Vegas to trade for Johnson.

Despite concerns, Johnson is still the favored choice for the nickel role. If he performs well in this position during the 2026 season, his leverage—and potentially his financial demands—will increase. If the Raiders decide to offer Johnson a new contract now, they could risk investing in an aging player. This dilemma wasn’t evident when they acquired him, but now threatens to cause friction as the team seeks a cultural reset.
