Kylian Mbappé Condemns Paraguayan Senator’s Racist Remarks

France star Kylian Mbappé spoke out against Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after her racist comments following Paraguay’s World Cup loss to France. Mbappé described Amarilla as a “despicable woman” and criticized her as “unworthy” of serving in Paraguay’s Congress. He emphasized that her reckless racism overshadowed the accomplishments of the Paraguayan players during the World Cup.

Following the decisive penalty by Mbappé that secured France’s victory, Amarilla made a series of derogatory comments, mocking aspects of Mbappé’s background and appearance. As France advanced to face Morocco in the quarterfinals, the Paraguayan government issued a statement condemning Amarilla’s remarks. It affirmed that her comments did not align with the values of peaceful coexistence and respect promoted by Paraguay.

The Paraguayan government expressed that Amarilla’s statements do not represent the views of the government or its people.

The French Football Federation also condemned Amarilla’s comments, labeling them as “abhorrent” and “unacceptable.” The federation plans to refer the issue to prosecutors. French president Emmanuel Macron and sports minister Marina Ferrari expressed their support for Mbappé. They highlighted that targeting Mbappé is an attack on the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity that France stands for.

Assistant coach Guy Stéphan supported the condemnation, describing the remarks as “indignant, abject, scandalous.” The Associated Press reached out for Amarilla’s comment via her social media accounts. Meanwhile, prior to the match, ex-Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert referred to the French team as “a squad from Africa.” Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, criticized Chilavert’s comments, suggesting that his reputation has been tarnished.

Mbappé’s response underscores the ongoing fight against racism in sports, emphasizing the importance of addressing such issues and honoring the values each nation cherishes.
