Knicks and Towns Face Contract Dilemma Ahead of New Season

The New York Knicks are entering the new NBA season as the reigning champions, a title they haven’t held in over five decades. At the center of their success is Karl-Anthony Towns, a key player who significantly contributed to their championship win.

During the Knicks’ playoff run, Towns averaged impressive statistics: 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game. He maintained a shooting accuracy of 55.1% from the field and 45.6% from three-point range. His performance made him a formidable opponent on the court, playing a vital role in the team’s victory.

However, there is growing concern about Towns’ future with the Knicks. He is eligible for a contract worth up to $276 million over four years, but the team prefers to offer less. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the discrepancy in contract negotiations could extend into the regular season.

Towns has expressed a desire to remain in New York and is willing to take a pay cut. Yet, he considers the Knicks’ reduced offer to be “unreasonable.”

This situation creates tension at a time when the Knicks aim to defend their title in the 2026-27 season. Managing league tax penalties while retaining their key players is a challenge familiar to all championship contenders. Towns seeks a maximum contract, which would make him the highest-paid player in the NBA, with an annual salary of approximately $69 million.

Currently, Towns is set to earn $57.1 million for the upcoming season, ranking his contract among the largest in the league. He also holds a $61.1 million player option for the 2027-28 season. Without reaching an agreement soon, Towns may enter free agency after the season concludes.
