King Charles III Clarifies Harry and Meghan’s Royal Status

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are maintaining their status as non-working members of the royal family. This confirmation follows their recent visit to the United Kingdom. King Charles III, in a letter addressed to senior government officials, reaffirmed that the couple will continue to abstain from using their royal titles following their step back from royal duties in 2020. The couple’s charitable endeavors will remain private, with security matters left to relevant police agencies.

The letter was dispatched by the Lord Chamberlain, the highest-ranking official in the royal household, to senior government and military officials, as well as lord lieutenants who act as the king’s representatives nationwide. The directive aimed to eliminate any doubt or confusion regarding the couple’s status.

The public announcement of this letter highlights concerns that Harry and Meghan’s current status might lead them to function as a rival royal entity, potentially competing with official working royals. The issue of security is especially contentious. Prince Harry has actively sought the reinstatement of publicly funded police protection, which ceased after relinquishing his royal responsibilities. The decision on the restoration of this protection is under the purview of RAVEC, the Royal and VIP Executive Committee.

The Lord Chamberlain further advised that any inquiries from official or state organizations regarding the courtesies to be extended to the Duke and Duchess, especially those involving public funds, should be directed to Buckingham Palace.
