Kate Koval, a notable Ukrainian center and former women’s basketball player at LSU, has openly discussed her departure from the team. Her decision to leave was announced back in August, with LSU head coach Kim Mulkey attributing “personal reasons” to her exit.
On Wednesday, Koval shared a statement through her official Instagram page, clarifying that her choice was influenced by Mulkey’s signing of Anna Minaeva, a 17-year-old Russian center. Koval expressed, “After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the LSU Women’s Basketball program and withdraw from LSU.” She further highlighted that she intended to continue her collegiate career at LSU following last season. However, the signing of a Russian player, which was disclosed to her several days after the transfer portal had closed, weighed heavily on her decision.
Koval’s Personal Connection
Koval detailed that her father’s service in the Ukrainian Army and the impact of “Russian aggression” on her friends and family significantly contributed to her choice to leave. She mentioned the losses and injuries suffered by loved ones, bringing a deep personal dimension to her decision.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey emphasized that her recruitment decisions were based on the program’s best interests. She stated, “I cannot make a decision to not recruit somebody that can help our program because of a conflict between two countries.” Mulkey seemed hopeful that both Koval and Minaeva would act as “ambassadors” to bridge geopolitical divides and foster unity.
Koval’s statement further revealed the emotional toll the situation had taken on her family. “The timing of this situation and the deeply personal effect it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me,” Koval shared.
Despite her departure from LSU, Koval is determined to continue her basketball career in college. Her desire to compete for another team in the 2026-27 season remains strong. “I hope the NCAA recognizes the circumstances surrounding my situation and understands the seriousness and deep nature of this matter. More than anything, I hope I am given the opportunity to compete at another school during the upcoming basketball season,” she stated.
OutKick, a sports media outlet, reached out to Koval and her representation for further comments. They were directed to her publicly released statement.
