Karen Read’s Legal Action Against Police and Town
Karen Read has initiated legal proceedings against the Massachusetts State Police and the town of Canton, accusing them of misconduct and negligence in the investigation that led to her prosecution. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Bristol County Superior Court.
Read’s acquittal last June, following charges related to the death of her boyfriend Boston police officer John O’Keefe, revealed deep-seated issues within the police and town administration. The suit claims these institutions harbor a culture of bigotry and systemic failures.
Details of the Alleged Misconduct and Negligence
The lawsuit highlights negligent practices in hiring, training, and supervising officers. It names former Canton police Sgt. Sean Goode and investigator Michael Proctor, pointing to inappropriate communications that demonstrate racist and sexist attitudes. These men were deemed unfit for the investigation, according to Read.
Read’s defense in her trial argued that O’Keefe was murdered by colleagues and framed Read for the incident. Despite prosecutors blaming Read, who was ultimately found guilty of drunken driving, her defense suggested a sinister cover-up by law enforcement.
Continuing Developments
The town of Canton and its police department have not commented publicly on the lawsuit. Goode, implicated in the lawsuit, resigned earlier this month following allegations of misconduct. Proctor, the investigator, lost his position after internal findings of biased communication.
The complaint contains extensive documentation, including texts and recordings, that support Karen Read’s claims about institutional misconduct.
