Justin Cooper, remembered for his role as Jim Carrey’s son in the 1997 film Liar Liar, shared his experiences with fame during childhood on the Not So Little Rascals podcast. Cooper talked about the challenges he faced while growing up in the spotlight, despite his mother’s efforts to protect him.
On the podcast, Cooper recounted a disturbing aspect of his fame: letters he received from prisons. Although his mother shielded him from the contents, Cooper later learned inmates often wrote to him expressing admiration and commenting on his appearance.
During a crucial period in his career, Cooper’s mother was vigilant in safeguarding his well-being, never leaving him unattended on set. This approach contrasted with many other acting parents at the time. She even approached Don Rickles, who starred alongside Cooper in Dennis the Menace Strikes Again, to ensure he refrained from using foul language around her son.
Cooper also mentioned how, when auditions began to feel burdensome, his mother supported his choice to leave the industry. He eventually preferred spending time socializing rather than continuing with acting. Cooper worried about disappointing her due to their close relationship, as she was deeply involved in his acting career.
Reflecting on his relationship with his mother, Cooper noted it was positive overall, though it hit a rough patch during high school when he stopped acting and began experimenting with marijuana. He fondly remembered her consistent support in his acting endeavors, from auditions to practicing lines.
