John Whitehead’s Reflections on the Christian Legal Movement

John Whitehead, founder of the Rutherford Institute, reflects on the evolution of the Christian legal movement. Established in 1982, the movement initially aimed to protect religious liberty. Whitehead did not foresee how it would evolve.

Back then, public debates on religious symbolism, like Starbucks holiday cups or bakers crafting cakes for same-sex weddings, were not common. Whitehead, a tall Southerner, embarked on a mission to establish a Christian religious liberty law firm. This was a pioneering effort at the time.

Over the years, the focus of religious liberty discussions has shifted. Issues that seemed peripheral in past decades have now taken center stage. The legal landscape continues to evolve, prompting reflections on its original purposes and outcomes.
