Joe Thomas: From NFL Great to Hall of Fame Farmer

Joe Thomas, a standout player for the Cleveland Browns, showcased excellence on the field without drawing much attention. His dedication was evident from the beginning when he opted to spend the 2007 NFL Draft day fishing with his father on Lake Michigan instead of attending the event in New York. This decision resulted in Thomas becoming the Browns’ third overall pick, signaling the start of his celebrated career.

During a game against the Baltimore Ravens on October 1, 2023, Thomas was honored by being inducted into the Cleveland Browns Ring of Honor. Having retired, he slimmed down and devoted himself to new pursuits beyond his NFL career. One significant endeavor is Hall of Fame Farms, a cattle business in Wisconsin.

Thomas gained attention early in his career by skipping the high-profile New York draft gathering. Unlike other top prospects who wore custom suits and embraced the fanfare, Thomas preferred a day spent fishing and was unbothered by the potential for negative consequences. He remained steadfast when NFL representatives suggested that teams could hold his absence against him. On that draft morning, he instead chose to fish for salmon and trout with his father, content with his decision.

Thomas said, “I wasn’t really interested in the pomp and circumstance of the NFL Draft.” He felt no need for a suit and valued the time with his dad more than the spectacle.

His career with the Browns lasted 11 years, marked by a humble approach that also characterizes his life post-retirement in Wisconsin. In 2018, retiring prompted Thomas to face the physical toll of playing at over 310 pounds. He shared his struggles with inflammation and pain until a doctor’s advice on weight loss spurred a lifestyle change.

Thomas embraced intermittent fasting, cutting out processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and seed oils. He turned to garden vegetables and high-quality proteins, resulting in less joint pain and increased mobility. Today, he presents a leaner frame resembling that of an NFL tight end.

This journey of health inspired his venture into Hall of Fame Farms. Originally a cash-crop operation, Thomas chose to add livestock after his children insisted that a “real farm” should have animals.

“My passion that made me a perfectionist in football started to apply to the cattle business,” Thomas explained. He treats the animals with the care and attention of professional athletes, aiming for the highest quality beef. His farm produces Wagyu and Certified Angus beef, focusing on premium products.

The farm provides more than high-quality meat. It offers a fulfilling lifestyle, where Thomas enjoys raising his four children and cultivating the land. He frequently involves his kids in outdoor activities like fishing and emphasizes the importance of connecting with nature.

“When I see them catch their first fish, the joy they experience is incomparable,” Thomas remarked. Sharing his love of the outdoors and passing it on to his children brings him contentment, reinforcing pride in his role as a father.
