Joe Theismann Discusses NFL’s Shift from Tradition

Super Bowl champion Joe Theismann has observed a significant change in the NFL’s approach to scheduling games. Theismann highlighted that the NFL now features an expanded primetime schedule, including holidays and international games, moving away from traditional Sunday afternoon slots.

“They’ve moved away from tradition,” Theismann emphasized in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. He noted that the variety of streaming services and networks make the viewing landscape vastly different from what it used to be, when ABC, NBC, and CBS were the primary broadcasters for sporting events.

Theismann mentioned that fans once eagerly anticipated Sundays for watching games. Now, games happen on various days and nights, including Monday, Thursday, and even Saturday. “If you’re a fan of the NFL, you can find a game nearly any night,” he remarked.

This year’s NFL schedule includes a season opener on a Wednesday, with a follow-up game in Melbourne, Australia, on a Thursday. A new addition to the schedule introduces a Thanksgiving Eve game, and the league continues its annual Black Friday game tradition. NFL’s scheduling also features three games on Christmas Day, a Friday. Once the college football season concludes in December, additional games will appear on Saturdays.

Theismann acknowledged that while some may miss tradition, the current setup grants fans greater access to games. “You can now easily find and watch the game you want without waiting for next-day reports,” he noted. “Although many long for the past, adapting to change is essential,” Theismann added.

As a progressive individual, Theismann believes that change is part of life, and adaptation is necessary.

Besides football, Theismann plays an active role in the American Century Championship golf tournament. Theismann, now a nine-handicap golfer, plans to participate in the upcoming tournament held in Lake Tahoe from July 10-12. He fondly described the tournament as an exciting opportunity to engage with fellow sports and entertainment celebrities.

“The American Century Championship is a must for golf enthusiasts, especially in the celebrity world,” he stated. He enjoys interacting with personalities such as Jerry Rice, Tony Romo, and Miles Teller, whom he admires.

The tournament has raised over $8 million for charities, with American Century Investments donating a portion of its profits to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. Theismann praised CEO Jonathan Thomas for the organization’s charitable efforts.

The tournament will air on NBC and Peacock, extending its reach and impact. Readers can visit Fox News Digital for more sports updates and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter for regular coverage.
