Iran’s World Cup Training Base Relocated to Mexico

The president of Iran’s soccer governing body announced a significant change regarding the national team’s World Cup training base. The Iran Football Federation has decided to move its training operations from the United States to Mexico, as confirmed by Mehdi Taj, the federation’s president. This decision was made following discussions and approval from FIFA.

Originally slated to train in Tucson, Arizona, the team will now prepare in Tijuana, Mexico, located near San Diego. The relocation comes amid concerns related to security and geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East. Although FIFA has not publicly confirmed the move, the federation has proceeded with its plans.

Taj explained in his statement that all team bases must receive FIFA approval. The federation’s request was granted after meetings with FIFA and World Cup officials in Istanbul, alongside a webinar with FIFA’s secretary general in Tehran. The transition to Tijuana is strategic due to its proximity to Inglewood, California, where Iran will compete in two Group G matches against New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

Tijuana offers suitable facilities, including training amenities, a gym, a private restaurant, and other necessities for the team. The move aims to avoid potential visa complications, allowing entry to the U.S. via Mexico. The federation highlighted the possibility of using Iran Air flights for travel between Mexico and the U.S.

This year marks Iran’s fourth consecutive World Cup appearance and its seventh overall. The team, known as Team Melli, seeks to progress beyond the initial rounds, a feat they have yet to accomplish. Base camps are crucial for teams to train before and after their matches.
