Investigation Launched into Possible Arson on Turlington Road

A fire incident involving multiple abandoned homes on Turlington Road in Harvey is under investigation as possible arson according to the Harvey Fire Department. The department released a statement indicating that evidence suggests the fires might have been deliberately set. Further forensic analysis and investigative efforts are needed to confirm this.

The blaze occurred at 2:30 a.m. on June 2 on the 15400 block of Turlington Road and was contained by 4 a.m. The fire department is prioritizing the investigation, with Fire Chief Howard Fisher emphasizing the importance of community safety. In his words, “The safety of our residents, businesses, and firefighters remains our highest priority.”

In a rare twist, electricians discovered a kitten amidst the debris following the fires on the 5400 block of Turlington Road. This discovery was reported by Addison Wright of the Daily Southtown.

The fire spread rapidly from two structures consumed by flames to two other nearby abandoned buildings. This was due to extreme heat and active power line hazards. To mitigate risks, ComEd enacted a temporary power cutoff as a precaution. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Due to a recent state of financial distress declared by Harvey, about 40% of city workers were furloughed in October, including a significant portion of the Fire Department. As a result, mutual aid from neighboring communities has been crucial over the last seven months in addressing such emergencies.

Authorities urge those with information about the fires to contact them at 708-331-7720. The department is collaborating with state and local partners to thoroughly investigate the incident.
