Investigation Launched After Vandalism Near Washington Monument

The National Park Service initiated a criminal investigation following the discovery of stains in the grass near the Washington Monument. The marks formed the numbers ’86 47′, raising concerns over potential vandalism.

On June 11, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m. ET, the U.S. Park Police identified the discolored patches. These were visible from a webcam atop the Washington Monument, emphasizing the size of the vandalism. The grassy area between the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial is a prominent location but is not immune to such acts.

The number ’86’ is a slang term often implying removal or elimination. In this context, it has gained attention because ’47’ references the presidency of Donald Trump, the nation’s 47th and 45th president. The Trump administration previously interpreted these numbers as calls for the president’s assassination.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the grass stains. The incident occurred shortly before an Ultimate Fighting Championship event hosted by President Trump at the White House, coinciding with his 80th birthday. The U.S. Park Police reported the vandalism around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, on the west lawn of the monument.
