Authorities in New Jersey are investigating a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a woman at her residence in Somerville. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office reported that Alyne Espinal, 46, was found with severe lacerations to her chest, neck, and thigh. She was declared dead at the location.
Her husband, Ignacio Espinal, aged 55, was apprehended in West New York, New Jersey, on Tuesday. He has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to his wife’s death, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officers responded to a 911 call just before 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The call expressed concerns for the wellbeing of a woman living on Brookside Avenue. Upon arrival, investigators discovered Alyne Espinal deceased from multiple stab wounds inside the apartment.
This tragic incident took place merely 20 minutes away from Chester, where another case involving the death of a new mother, Brooke Hanlon, 35, remains unresolved. Hanlon was found dead in June. Both cases have drawn significant community concern.
Brooke Hanlon’s death was officially ruled as a homicide. She was discovered on June 6 in Morris County. Two months later, on August 6, Alyne Espinal was found dead just 15 miles away in Somerset County.
The key difference between these cases lies in the swift action taken in Somerset County. Following the discovery of Espinal’s body, authorities quickly identified a suspect and made an arrest.
Interestingly, Conor Hanlon, Brooke Hanlon’s husband, previously worked close to the scene of Espinal’s death but is not accused of any involvement in either case. He was seen leaving a residence in Brighton, Massachusetts, on July 9, 2026.
In the Somerset County case, the Prosecutor’s Office stated: The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence.
Ignacio Espinal faces charges including first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and third-degree hindering.
